FunHunt Thursdays With DJ Shark Punch

You know idiot savants? The guys that are completely non-functional in life 98% of the time, then pull off something impossibly hard like playing Rocmoninoff moments after their case worker has looked inside their mouth to check if they've swallowed their tongue? Well, there's also a sub-class of this condition. It's when someone lives semi-functionally and then does something relatively easy with utter brilliance and superiority. Like DJing.

And in this vein, the mysterious DJ Shark Punch made his Toronto debut last Thursday at Dundas West's Cocktail Molotov. Shark Punch's expansive mix of Britpop, Mod, psychobilly, punk, and guilty pleasures seemed to lift the Trinity Bellwoods neighborhood out of their Mirkwood Forest-style pub stagnation into something, well, fun. The night started out with the crowds nearly as thin as the lead guitar on an early Talking Heads tune. Then the smokers out front attracted some walk-ins. It was as though the music Cardinals had sent the white smoke wafting to let you know a new Pope was chosen. Actually, not like that at all.

But there is a certain je-ne-sais-quoi about this DJ. Rumor has it, he has held over thirty different jobs ranging from Subway "Sandwich Artist" to university professor. What is known is that he plays some wild music. He makes all the standard New Wave moves, throws down some Motown funk-a-lunks, bearable punk scratch, Old School, some Vegas-bloated Elvis, white hot Synth, 60s to 90s nostalgia moves, and then blows you over with some unknown number. This Shark's art ain't sandwiches.

So, if you are embarrassed by the amount of your apartment your record collection requires, as in over 25%, then you should definitely check out FunHunt Thursdays with DJ Shark Punch. He has no shame.

Coctail Molotov is 928 Dundas West. FunHunt Thursdays happen every week. No cover. 416-603-6691.
