Live review: Jake Fairley

Funny times that we live in. While Boa sets about relocating itself, The Mod Club - traditionally the scene of sweaty indie nights - becomes a dance music haven! Last weekend home to Joey Youngman - a night I missed because of my skimpy means - this weekend home to Jake Fairley and company.

I arrived pretty early on and the music was already going pretty strong; in your face, bass heavy, funky ass, techno would be my best description of it. I'm not sure who was spinning in these early stages but they did a good job of getting the considerable crowd rocking.

Jake Fairely eventually hopped up on stage around 1am and was the highlight of the night for me and the crowd I'd say, judging by its size and body movement through the course of the evening. I have absolutely no idea what Fairley was doing up on stage apart from some serious head bobbing - there wasn't much sign of decks being involved whatever it was. He could in all honesty have just been pressing play on a cd player, but I didn't really mind. His music - a kind of fusion of rock, electro and deep, dark, acid laced techno - was original enough to keep us all entertained.

Toronto DJ twosome The Dukes drew the night to a happy close playing back to back. This worked pretty well; they have quite different record collections - one electro minded, the other quite avant gard and glitchy - so the crossovers made for some interesting concoctions. I thought some were more successful than others mind you.
