David Buchbinder CD release
Trumpeter David Buchbinder, who wowed Toronto's Distilery District last year with his show SHURUM BURUM Jazz Circus, is bringing the circus back to town next Thursday and Friday with the release of his first solo CD, of the same name .
Shurum Burum is an apt description of the CD's music as it evokes the topsy turvy nature of both the sights of the circus and the sounds of Buchbinder's compositions.
I admit that I tend to be rather girly when it comes to jazz -- I prefer traditional vocals to instrumental, and I like my instructmentals to be swing danceable -- but there are things that I liked on this CD.
There's the multiethnic/national flavourings to enjoy: the circus goes from Jeruselem, to New Orleans, to New York City (a la West Side story). The track "Swagger" made me do just that. And with "Stone of Folly" you get Cabaret meets the dream sequence of An American in Paris. Funky stuff.
But then you have "King Rat" which had me envision clowns on elephants. What the heck had Buchbinder been drinking?
Buchbinder and his emsemble, featuring JUNO winner bassist Roberto Occhipinti among others, will be playing at The Rex Jazz Bar, 194 Queen St. W., on Thursday November 10th and Friday November 11th at 9:30 pm.
Tickets are $12, which is a steal if you ask me.
