Finally got myself along to the new Boa (360 Adelaide West) last night to see the disco funk band Greenskeepers and house music legend Derrick Carter.

Greenskeepers played early on downstairs and were pretty rubbish I thought. They try and play funky house and it is nice to see a band try and adapt house music to a live setting but it doesn't really work. They play a continuous set, each track mixing into the next, and the rigid 4/4 beat just becomes repetitive. They eventually end which is pleasing and I head upstairs for Derrick Carter.

Upon entering the upstairs room the sound blew me away; it does a good job of living up to the setup when Boa was at its old home on Spadina. It's punchy but really contained as well; you can have a conversation next to the main speaker and hear yourself even though the sound fills the room. Derrick comes on and people, myself included, are pretty happy about this. After a bit of a duff start, he begins to play some of the heaviest tunes I've heard in a very long time and delves into a fantastic variety of records: hard edged house, glitch, hip hop, Destiny's Child(!), funk, minimal techno...The only real common factor is that pretty much all the records contain some of the ugliest, most disgusting bass that exists this side of the 21st century. And with the sound system to cope with it this equates to a very excellent night.
