Sigur Ros Send Chills Up Spines

Enigmatic Icelandic post-rock experimentalists Sigur Ros sent chills up spines and put wide smiles on faces following their Saturday night sold out performance at Massey Hall.

With an emotional rollercoaster of sound sometimes described as ethereal yet intense, sometimes ominous but also soothing, the band treated Toronto to a brilliant visual and aural performance. Their gradual builds and orchestral explosions were well-matched by interesting (and at times what appeared to be sound-sensing) lighting and projected visuals. They played a diverse selection that spanned all of their albums - a welcome treat for the seasoned fan.

The enthusiastic audience was loud and persistent and when the band returned to the stage for their encore, the audience erupted in appreciation. Closing the show with untitled track #8 from their 2002 album ( ) was high drama. The extremely captivating song ended in a fury of sound and light and a lengthy standing ovation as the members of the group returned to the stage to bow three times.

If you haven't yet heard Sigur Ros, you really ought to. They're one of those bands that are best understood by listening to them because I find describing them is not only difficult, but also inadequate. Check out some of their exceptional music and videos and be sure to snag a ticket next time they perform live in Toronto.
