The Weakerthans @ Harbourfront

When the Weakerthans' John K. Samson opened Saturday's Harboufront show with a solo version of "One Great City!", it wasn't at all difficult for the Toronto crowd to join in singing "I.. hate.. Winnipeg!" with gusto. In fact the whole night was filled with enthusiastic singalongs, both new and old. It's hard to pigeon-hole the Weakerthans into a defineable genre, because I think they bring a bit of everything to everyone, but what they bring best are lovely tales of contemplation, cats and Canadiana topped with warm smiles & pop-rock melodies. The night was hot as #%@! and sprinkled with rain and heat lightening, but the Weakerthans made it a splendid night for rock. And although I was dissapointed that I didn't spot any Burton Cummings masks, apparantly I just didn't look hard enough because even Harbourfront security was sporting 'em.
