Call & Response: Uncut

Call & Response: Uncut

Fundraisers are a good thing. Rock concerts that are fundraisers are even better. Rockin' fundraisers at beautiful, unorthodox venues like University of Toronto's Hart House are not to be missed.

Go there tonight and see Toronto band Uncut shake that historic building to its foundations. Take one listen to the band's second full length record Modern Currencies (out now on Paper Bag Records) and you will hear a band who is taking their sound in new, loud directions.

But don't take my word for it. I spoke with Uncut singer/guitarist Ian Worang about their sound, getting around the city and, um, dick jokes.

Keep reading for the complete interview.

blogTO: Why are you called Uncut?

Ian Worang: There really isn't any reason. It just seemed like a good name. It wasn't until later that we realized all the "other" connotations that came along with it. Mostly the dick jokes, although we did recently get asked if we were really into director's cuts of films, like "Apocalypse Now Redux". That was kind of funny.

How would you describe your sound using only one word?

Loud.

Does living in Toronto inspire your songwriting at all?

For me, yes, very much so. A lot of my lyrics are about Toronto and the people who live here. Both things I love and things that bother me.

What do you like best about living here?

It's a big city with a sense of community and neighbourhood to it. That's a hard balance to maintain, but I think we do an admirable job of it.

What do you dislike most about living here?

All the condos with crappy names like Bohemian Embassy are pretty horrible and Ben Mulroney makes my skin crawl.

What is your preferred method of transportation around town?

Bicycle.

Any opinions on the TTC?

Oh gosh ... it's too small to be as effective as it should be, yet it's too expensive. It's a real pickle, isn't it?

You're playing your second fundraiser in a week this Friday. Do you approach playing fundraisers differently than playing your own shows?

Not really. We just treat it like a normal show.

Have you started work on any new material? If yes, how would you describe it?

We've just started working on some new stuff. It's really loud.
