Call & Response: Team Canada DJs

After taking some time off to recouperate from Canadian Music Week, Call & Response is back just in time for one of the craziest weekends of the year for dance clubs. Some people have a four-day weekend and there are no less than ten solid events happening between Thursday and Monday. Whatever you do though, don't end up at the Comfort Zone.

Team Canada DJs are Grandtheft and D.R.one - two amazing DJs from Montreal who have been lighting up dancefloors all around the world. A-list celebs invite them to spin at their private parties and they are starting to build a name for themselves in multiple genres thanks to tight mixing skills in the DJ booth and impressive production/remixing skills in the studio.

I spoke to D.R.one about The Habs, mintrels, and the party they're bringing to the massive Decadence event tomorrow night at the Guvernment complex.

Keep reading for the complete interview.

blogTO: Why did you pick such a patriotic name?

D.R.one: We chose the name Team Canada because we're both proud Canadians and because we both love hockey. At first we were going to call ourselves "Team Italianese" or "Japalian", since I am part Italian and Grandtheft is part Japanese but in the end we thought Team Canada had a better ring to it.

Have you always DJed as a team? How did you hook up and start playing together?

No, we haven't always DJed together but we have worked together for a long time. We first met while working as medival troubadors in a travelling minstrel show. It was a pretty good gig, the pay wasn't awesome but chicks really dig dudes in period costumes.

You're getting very well-known. What helped you get noticed?

Other than our lavish lifestyles and our exotic and endagered pets our beautiful hair really sets us apart from the rest. You can't look at us without noticing and commenting on our elegant coifs. Seriously, we take every party we play to differnt level of energy. That, is what really sets us apart.

What do you like best about Toronto?

Their minstrel scene.

What do you like the least?

The Leafs (sorry guys).

What's the biggest difference between Montreal and Toronto?

The Habs are better than the Leafs this year by a long shot hahaha! Toronto is far bigger in terms of any artistic scene, and, obviously, the French/Euro roots of Montreal that is just so different from anywhere else in North America.

Who are your favourite Toronto DJs?

We signed Jr. Flo to our Eh! Team DJs management roster because we love what he brings in terms of showmanship and party-rocking. We are also bringing on his exciting new live-remix project with Matisse.

What are your current top 5 tracks to spin at shows?

Get Low (GT Remix) - Flo Rida
Miscommunication (Bloody Beetroots Remix) - Timbaland
Phantom Pt 2 (Soulwax Remix) - Justice
Hustler (Armand Van Helden Remix) - Simian Mobile Disco
Jupiter - Digitalism

You're playing a big party here on March 20. What can we expect from your set?

Alot of heavy heavy club fire... and some brand-spankin new club remixes from GT...

Is there anything else the people of Toronto should know about Team Canada?

We are opening an awesome new venue in Montreal called The Blue Dog Motel. Its gonna be all fun dance parties and good music. Opening April 10-13 weekend... come visit Toronto!!!
