Sultry, folk-rock singer/songwriter Shelby Lamb could be Toronto's next Joni Mitchell. That's what I've heard people say about her at shows. Her velvety voice can create a soothing atmosphere in any bar, club, car or living room.

Shelby is originally from Collingwood and is part of the Toronto-based Familiar Music collective. Last year she released a lovely EP entitled Suburban Cowboy, and tonight she plays the Savannah Room as part of NXNE. I spoke with Shelby about her life in Toronto, her plans for the future, and the dream of playing with an upright bass player.

blogTO: How would you describe your sound?

Shelby Lamb: Organic.

What influences your music and lyrics the most?

Life.

I've heard people describe you as "the next Joni Mitchell". What do you think of that comparison?

You've heard that? I don't see it although I did grow up addicted to her.

Your backing band changes from show to show. Do you prefer collaborating with different people or would you prefer to have a steady backing band?

I'd prefer a steady band for sure. We're working it out. People come and go.

You're playing NXNE Friday night. Do you like playing in festivals or would you prefer to play your own show?

I like playing anytime, anywhere.

What NXNE artists/bands would you recommend to our readers?

Gregory Pepper.

Have you always lived in Toronto? What do you like best about living downtown?

I've lived in Toronto since '97. I like downtown for the parks and vintage shops and bars.

What do you like least?

Traffic and hooligans.

Where is your favourite place to enjoy the sunshine?

The park - I live next to Bellwoods.

What can we expect to see/hear/feel at your NXNE set?

Jesse got an upright bass recently. I'm hoping he'll play it! We're stripped down a bit.

Are you working on any new recordings right now? When can we expect your next release?

Yes! A new full length in the making to be released in September.
