The Bicycles

Indie band 'The Bicycles' double ride at Lee's Palace

November 4th was a busy day for me. Barack Obama won the presidency, I had a 10-hour shift at work, and it was garbage day on my street.

'Oh No It's Love', a new album by local pop sensations 'The Bicycles', was also released. I didn't make it to Sonic Boom that day, but I did show up at their C.D. release show on Saturday.

Titled 'The Last Schmaltz 2', the concept of the show was pretty clever. The Bicycles were to shake and shimmy their way through all nineteen tracks of their new album while stepping back every couple songs for a special guest appearance.

The 'Oh No it's Love' album keeps The Bicycles formula intact; 1960's pop hooks, lighter then air Matt Beckett vocals and a plethora of handclaps. The main difference between this release and their debut is the production; it's pretty thick. The lyrics get lost in a forest of trumpets and tambourines every once in a while.

The new songs are fantastic live however, and the line-up of guests was top-notch. They included blue grass group '$100', electro pop hooligans 'Green Go', and up and coming hipster sextet 'Hooded Fang'.

'$100' in particular knocked me out; their smoky valentine to rural Canadian love, 'careless love', brought the crowd to their knees. They're playing another show at the Dakota on Saturday.

All in all the Bicycles were electric, the guest stars were eclectic, and trying to leave the capacity venue after the show was hectic.
