The Neighbourhood Mixtape

The Neighbourhood Mixtape: Soma

The Neighbourhood Mixtape is a collection of newly-released songs by Toronto musicians. The mixtape is meant to celebrate Toronto's music culture and provide a forum to listen to and discover new local music.

Every Sunday, I post a five-track mixtape (along with my own mini-reflections for each track) that you can download or stream as a soundtrack for the week.

Track #1: Trust, "Candy Walls"

We open our collection this week with the macabre "Candy Walls" by Trust - like a somnambulist who chases a familiar voice in the dark. You can pre-order Trust's 7-inch, which includes the single here.

Track #2: Revelstoke, "We Stood Staring at Lights"

"Once the moon dictates its game plan / I'll just wait here for the tide," repeats Andrew Seale. It's a ritual of waiting, tapping a guitar's surface, which sounds like a ticking clock.

Track #3: Roads and Boats, "Tijuana"

If you like Brian Eno, then you will appreciate Roads and Boats' crystallized "Tijuana". The instrumental evokes scattered islands and locks of hair swimming underwater.

Track #4: Timber Timbre, "Black Water"

Piano keys stumble in Timber Timbre's "Black Water", a stark black and white melody, invoking a blind hand trying to carve a face from ivory.

Track #5: Fucked Up, "The Other Shoe"

At the shadowy end of the street, there's a voice. "The Other Shoe", like a crash of waves, wakes you up. Download Fucked Up's new track for free on Matador Records.
