The Neighbourhood Mixtape: From the faun forever gone

The Neighbourhood Mixtape is a collection of newly-released songs by Toronto musicians. The mixtape is meant to celebrate Toronto's music culture and provide a forum to listen to and discover new local music.

Every Sunday, I post a five-track mixtape (along with my own mini-reflections for each track) that you can download or stream as a soundtrack for the week.

Track #1: Memoryhouse, "Modern Normal"

Sub Pop newbies Memoryhouse are set to rerelease their first EP The Years, featuring reworked tracks like "Sleep Patterns", along with new additions like the magnetic and serene track "Modern Normal".

Track #2: First Rate People, "Someone Else Can Make a Work of Art"

First Rate People create flowing and dreamy ear-catchers like "Someone Else Can Make a Work of Art", a perennial track that suits any season.

Track #3: Paradise Animals, "At This Time"

Jagged vocals glide across bass line peaks, twisting and turning through beat-driven and morose electro just before the track plunges into a pitfall of narcotic baritones.

Track #4: Elliott Brood, "Northern Air"

Mark Sasso's rambling vocals float on a breeze blown all the way from imagined backwoods and sunny prairies. Light ukulele strums, hopscotch drums and a touch of an old, rusty harmonica carries the track - a summertime, sitting on the back porch jam.

Track #5: Lou Canon, "Here As A Ghost"

"Here As A Ghost" is a minimal waltz, a bright elegy. And like Canon's video for the track shows, everyone needs a little bit of company, some silliness, a mixed conversation and sometimes even a little bit of sadness to keep you going.
