The Neighbourhood Mixtape: Trick Pony

The Neighbourhood Mixtape is a collection of newly-released songs by Toronto musicians. The mixtape is meant to celebrate Toronto's music culture and provide a forum to listen to and discover new local music.

Every Sunday, I post a five-track mixtape (along with my own mini-reflections for each track) that you can download or stream as a soundtrack for the week.

Track #1: Father Christmas, "Red Son"

"Red Sun" quickly warms the ears, with vocals that glide along on a freefall of acoustic and banjo picks as central as Kyle Peters' voice.

Track #2: The Cool Hands, "Devil's Collector"

The Cool Hands' "Devil's Collector" possesses that scratchy cassette tape quality, its muddled and frantic buzz strangely charming.

Track #3: Spies And Scientists, "Girl Automaton"

Throw some sunscreen on and listen to S&S' beach-bop "Girl Automaton", the song's hooks as sticky as the hot summer weather, its chorus as likeable as it is simple.

Track #4: Austra, "Spellwork (MNDR Nighttime Remix)"

Austra, who made the Polaris Music Prize shortlist, gets one of their spellbinding tracks - "Spellwork" - remixed by NYC electronic duo MNDR. The track will be part of a remix album titled Sparkle, out July 26 on Paper Bag Records.

Track #5: Army Girls, "The Power"

If you read last week's Call & Response, then you'll know why we're featuring both Austra and Army Girls together (Carmen Elle of Army Girls also worked with Austra). "The Power" rises with raw energy - a heat wave of beautiful aggression.
