The Neighbourhood Mixtape: Vultures Like Lovers

The Neighbourhood Mixtape is a collection of newly-released songs by Toronto musicians. The mixtape is meant to celebrate Toronto's music culture and provide a forum to listen to and discover new local music.

Every Sunday, I post a five-track mixtape (along with my own mini-reflections for each track) that you can download or stream as a soundtrack for the week.

Track #1: Dream Jefferson, "Robokill Beneath Disco Club Layla"

"Robokill Beneath Disco Club Layla" is an earful of a track. Dream Jefferson takes advantage of the energy and bounce of summer, using bass rumbles and hip-hop electro to create turbulent funk.

Track #2: Young Truck, "Brown Bag"

"Brown Bag" is a blast of fuzz. Bleary vocals scatter and echo from different places - a chaotic and dark thrill ride from start to finish.

Track #3: The Paint Movement, "Young Lights"

The Paint Movement are ready to release their sophomore self-titled LP in August. And to give you a glimpse of the new record, the band released the LP's opener "Young Lights", which warms up quickly and then drifts like a dream.

Track #4: First Rate People, "Charlie Kaufman"

First Rate People are a flamboyant and adventurous group, comfortable with creating exuberant pop and colourful ear-candy songs like "Charlie Kaufman", with its lush polyrhythmic melodies and cheerful choruses.

Track #5: Iroquois Falls, "Hey Annie, Twice Born Once From A Gun"

There's something fearlessly haunting in the way Iroquois Falls suspends her words in a spiny minimalist noise that collapses in the drones of an organ.
