The Neighbourhood Mixtape: You're Right, It's True

The Neighbourhood Mixtape is a collection of newly-released songs by Toronto musicians. The mixtape is meant to celebrate Toronto's music culture and provide a forum to listen to and discover new local music.

Every Sunday, I post a five-track mixtape (along with my own mini-reflections for each track) that you can download or stream as a soundtrack for the week.

Track #1: Vague Lines, "Found"

Vague Lines' "Found" paralyzes with primal noise and barricades of foggy and frazzled conversation that lacerate your eardrums.

Track #2: Slim Twig, "Priscilla"

Max Turnbull (who performs in the persona of Slim Twig) takes you around and around in relentless baroque-pop, where blitzkrieg bleeps and whimsy wails repeat on end.

Track #3: Kashka, "Llanos"

Kashka is James Bunton (Ohbijou) and Kat Burns (Forest City Lovers), and their track "Llanos" ascends, propelled by gusts of light electro and freckled with sunny textures. Their EP Llanos comes out on August 2nd.

Track #4: Light Fires, "10 Feet Tall"

It's only appropriate that we feature Light Fires this week alongside Kashka (another side project that includes James Bunton of Ohbijou). In "10 Feet Tall", Bunton shines some bliss with his keyboard, while Gentleman Reg's bold and magnetic vocals bounce with the beats.

Track #5: Owen Pallett, "Hard To Explain"

This week Stereogum released a free tribute album for The Strokes' classic LP Is This It. Owen Pallett offers a trademark rendition of "Hard To Explain" - his violin taking the place of the song's simple drumbeats and guitar-interplay, his vocal tone inviting as ever.
