The Neighbourhood Mixtape: Knee High

The Neighbourhood Mixtape is a collection of newly-released songs by Toronto musicians. The mixtape is meant to celebrate Toronto's music culture and provide a forum to listen to and discover new local music.

Every Sunday, I post a five-track mixtape (along with my own mini-reflections for each track) that you can download or stream as a soundtrack for the week.

Track #1: RLMDL, "Just My Luck"

A haze of quiet noise in "Just My Luck" - foggy melody, broken bits of bass and static - produces mood sequencers mixed with nostalgia, sadness and joy.

Track #2: Deloro, "No Fun"

In "No Fun" Deloro showcase their penchant for patient build-up and subtle arrangements. Lyrics repeat (and maintain an image of a light) while a nest of guitars buzz, creating a solemn crescendo.

Track #3: Rattail, "In Bloom"

Jasmyn Burke's vocals are as unique as they come. Her voice, combined with the band's dizzying elements of grunge and shoegaze, gives Rattail's "In Bloom" a charge of both confidence and vulnerability.

Track #4: Moon King, "Theme for Moon King"

"Let's pretend it's meant to be," sings Daniel Moon King Woodhead in his energetic bedroom-pop track that bubbles with playful unpredictability, like mutual, drunken seduction.

Track #5: Sonslanuit, "The Distance Between Us"

Sonslanuit's electro-acoustic instrumental track, "The Distance Between Us," unlocks a specific kind of feeling or a very personal listening experience: an interlude between action and inaction, a mind flickering, a slow blink.
