The Neighbourhood Mixtape: The Ecstatic Static
The Neighbourhood Mixtape is a collection of newly-released songs by Toronto musicians. The mixtape is meant to celebrate Toronto's music culture and provide a forum to listen to and discover new local music.
Every Sunday, I post a five-track mixtape (along with my own mini-reflections for each track) that you can download or stream as a soundtrack for the week.
Track #1: Holiday Rambler, "Dogwood"
Holiday Rambler is the solo project of Hooded Fang drummer D. Alex Meeks. "Dogwood" creates a place where your boots become damp from the dew of grass and moss, an empty wilderness where the sigh of a finger-picked acoustic guitar rides the rhythm of solitude.
Track #2: Silver Speakers, "William Lyon Mackenzie King"
A lot of things inspire Tyrone Warner, also known as Silver Speakers: imaginative, utopic lands, abandoned, inanimate objects, and he even pays tribute to the late ex-Leafs star, Wade Belak. Here, he takes a page from the Canadian History textbook, singing about Mackenzie, one of Canada's celebrated leaders, like a long lost friend.
Track #3: Broken Social Scene, "Hotel (Page Turner Remix)"
Years before he became Childish Gambino or Troy Barnes on Commuity, Donald Glover mixed under the moniker Page Turner. His recently dug-up remix of "Hotel" swaggers in synth, bass and funk, doing justice to a BSS classic.
Track #4: First Rate People, "Someone Else Can Make A Work Of Art (Kidstreet Remix)"
First Rate People's new EP Someone Else Can Make A Work Of Art is now available for free download. The EP includes a melancholy-eyed and wistful remix of the album-title track by Toronto/Waterloo's Kidstreet.
Track #5: Shawn Clarke & the Green Hearts, "Corners of Your Mouth"
Folk singer-songwriter Shawn Clarke is set to release a new EP Stray Birds. And Clarke put out a new track from his EP titled "Corners of Your Mouth" to be included on Static Zine's second mixtape collection (available for free download).
