The Neighbourhood Mixtape is a collection of newly-released songs by Toronto musicians. The mixtape is meant to celebrate Toronto's music culture and provide a forum to listen to and discover new local music.

Every Sunday, I post a five-track mixtape (along with my own mini-reflections for each track) that you can download or stream as a soundtrack for the week.

Track #1: Kyle Bobby Dunn, "Canyon Meadows"

The quick turn of seasons and seeing the branches around your neighbourhood empty themselves of leaves calls for something sentimental: "Canyon Meadows" emerges like a bright sun and sustains warm memories of summer - a song for the darker days ahead.

Track #2: Blood Rexdale and the Walls Are Blonde, "Setting Them Free"

"Setting Them Free" thrives in its hush arrangement and fuzzy cassette-tape quality, where simple strums of acoustic guitar and playful metaphors for love make you forget the silly things you really shouldn't worry about.

Track #3: Hollow Island, "Captcha"

Hollow Island produces a shake-up of atmospheric noise and impressionistic ambience. "Captcha" stirs the mood with a haze of dreamy interference, but it's only one part of the bigger picture, a margin within the story that the entire LP holds for listeners.

Track #4: Rose Brokenshire, "Light"

"Time will hold us tonight and call off the darkest light," Rose Brokenshire sings. And it's easy to imagine her, fingers in constant motion and her vocals, tethered to bare acoustics.

Track #5: Western WALK, "PolyTeen"

Western WALK's "PolyTeen" opens your eyes in discovery and wanderlust, conjuring images that have neither beginning nor end: A euphoric joy ride that peaks brighter with clarity and calm.
