The Neighbourhood Mixtape is a collection of newly-released songs by Toronto musicians. The mixtape is meant to celebrate Toronto's music culture and provide a forum to listen to and discover new local music.

Every Sunday, I post a five-track mixtape (along with my own mini-reflections for each track) that you can download or stream as a soundtrack for the week.

Track #1: LOOM, "There is Blood in my Body"

A clatter of percussion, the stray tide of strums and an anchor of strewn, salvaged words create an affecting love song, a language belonging only to Brooke Manning (LOOM), yet inviting those who listen patiently to the tune's falling feeling.

Track #2: Keys N Krates, "Ring the Alarm"

Electronic trio Keys N Krates clamors with hip-hop samples, pinball-plonk, and gritty beats in "Ring the Alarm", a track from their recently released EP Blackout, which you can download for free here.

Track #3: Sebastian Fleet, "Draining"

"You've been infected now," repeats Sebastian Fleet, his hollow voice floating while gradual layers of strummed chords gently build and fall. The song's neurotic and sombre pattern eclipses when the same lyric splits between two voices, leaving a lingering impression of a murky reality.

Track #4: Jesse Bellon, "Heath Legit"

Jesse Bellon's instrumental pieces strike with raw aggression like the sweeping epic "Heath Legit" - the triumphant closer to his free three-track record Upside Down Queen Stamp.

Track #5: Heartbeat Hotel, "Downhill"

"Downhill" fades in slowly until dreamy recoils of drum machine and clouds of vocal harmonies blend, soothing and drifting into the distance.
