The Neighbourhood Mixtape: Cross Country
The Neighbourhood Mixtape is a collection of newly-released songs by Toronto musicians. The mixtape is meant to celebrate Toronto's music culture and provide a forum to listen to and discover new local music.
Every Sunday, I post a five-track mixtape (along with my own mini-reflections for each track) that you can download or stream as a soundtrack for the week.
Track #1: Town Ship, "Real Numbers"
Town Ship's "Real Numbers" screeches with post-punk propulsion and floods with a spray of words that makes your head go blank.
Track #2: RatTail, "Gasmask"
"Gasmask console me / 'cus my eyes are so hazy," opens RatTail front-woman, Jasmyn Burke on the psychedelic pop track "Gasmask". Plunging bass lines and warped riffs create a blurred, dizzying feel, like a photocopied memory.
Track #3: Jos. Fortin, "D'argent, D'or"
There's a ragged quality to Jos. Fortin's voice, and in "D'argent, D'or" his rough edged tune evokes an aching feeling, with a full backing arrangement that roars as loud as his words.
Track #4: Young Waves, "Courtyard"
Download Young Waves' We Grew Up EP for free. The ambient album features the woozy, semi cassette-warped track "Courtyard" with its whirring blur of white noise and elegant, high-tide riffs cast in the breeze.
Track #5: The Elwins, "Propinquity"
Featured in this week's 5 breakout bands of 2012, The Elwins' sun-gaze track "Propinquity" brings a little happiness to your weekend.
