Neighbourhood Mixtape

The Neighbourhood Mixtape: Blues for Breakfast

The Neighbourhood Mixtape is a collection of newly-released songs by Toronto musicians. The mixtape is meant to celebrate Toronto's music culture and provide a forum to listen to and discover new local music.

Every Sunday, I post a five-track mixtape (along with my own mini-reflections for each track) that you can download or stream as a soundtrack for the week.

Track #1: WTCHS, "Adult Crimes"

Buzz Records continue to churn out impressive bands to add to their roster, and one of their newest is noise-pop group WTCHS. The hazy "Adult Crimes" conveys a static texture with plenty of drones and uncanny shifts. Grab the single here.

Track #2: Zeus, "Cool Blue (And the Things You Do)"

We love Zeus and their new record Busting Visions. Listen to the classic-sounding "Cool Blue", with its wash of twinkling piano and percussion, and then get yourself a copy of their album here.

Track #3: Lioness, "They Clip the Wings of Birds"

Dance-rock trio Lioness released their highly-anticipated debut album The Golden Killer (New Romantic) earlier this week, while also playing a glittering show at Sonic Boom for Record Store Day. Download their hypnotic centrepiece, "They Clip the Wings of Birds" for free here.

Track #4: The Bats Pajamas, "Red Scared"

The Bats Pajamas' torches with their surf-rock track "Red Scared" - part of their EP Totally (also our favourite album this week). The best part is that the entire EP is available for free download so you can listen to the band's fizzy, long-worn arrangements all day long.

Track #5: Doldrums, "Egypt"

Our favourite track this week comes from Airick Woodhead who has been creating music under the name Doldrums. "Egypt" represents Doldrums' electronic and experimental style, ringed with layers of space-disco gauze and weightless, chemical distortion.
