Edgefest

5 bands to check out at Edgefest 2012

Edgefest is back for another year at the freshly remodelled Downsview Park, and with it comes 25 bands spread over three stages in what promises to be a jam-packed day of live music this Saturday. To help make the lineup a bit more manageable, here are my picks for who not to miss at this year's fest.

As of publication, tickets are still available at a price of $61.10. You can also find additional information regarding the festival on the main Edgefest site, including directions on how to get to the park, what items they're allowing in, and a full list of the bands playing on Saturday.

Death From Above 1979 — Main Stage @ 7:10 PM
Jesse F. Keeler is on double duty this Saturday, as the famous Toronto bassist and DJ is not only playing with Death From Above 1979, but he'll also be there to inaugurate Edgefest's new electronic stage with his one-time side project MSTRKRFT. Last October I saw DFA and wrote a pretty favourable review of the show, and this past month, another writer on staff saw Keeler at the Hoxton and thought he threw a pretty good party.

The Darcys — Side Stage @ 2:20 PM
Since releasing their excellent reinterpretation of Steely Dan's seminal 1977 album, Aja, The Darcys have toured a large part of Canada, The US and Europe, and the band is close to releasing the third and final part in their trilogy of albums. While it's unlikely the band will preview new material, they're sure to draw on some of their best material as they play to an audience that's probably not too familiar with them. It's shame that they've only been given about thirty minutes to win over the Edgefest crowd, but for such a talented band, that shouldn't be a problem.

The Coppertone — Side Stage @ 1:45 PM
If the recent popularity of the Alabama Shakes has proven anything, it's that the music world hasn't forgotten its love for classic blues rock. Enter Toronto's own Amanda Zelina with her blues project The Coppertone. Zelina's combination of brash, confident voice and wall of fuzz is sure to impress.

The Balconies — Side Stage @ 1:10 PM
The Balconies are a band made up of brother and sister Jacquie and Steve Neville, and their close friend Liam Jaeger. The last time I saw them, the Ottawa ex-pats left the Garrison a hot and sweaty mess, so bring some extra water for their afternoon set.

Morgan Page — Side Stage @ 4:30 PM
In 2008, Toronto's quintessential house music diva, Deadmau5, remixed the "Longest Road," an effort that garnered the one-time progressive house producer his first Grammy nod. Although Deadmau5 has since abandoned progressive house, the man originally responsible for "Longest Road," Morgan Page, is still knee deep in the genre, having recently released In the Air, his newest full length. As such, Page's afternoon set will not only include some new tunes, but his set is likely going to be a nice alternative to the banger-heavy sets of some of the other DJs playing Edgefest.
