Street hockey may become legal on city roads
I know--who knew there was an actual street hockey ban?
But according to a bylaw dating back to 1970, ball-playing offenders can be charged $55 for playing on city roads.
"I didn't even know it was illegal," said Public Works Committee chair Glenn De
Baeremaeker. "That means most of us have been breaking the law all our life."
Committee councilors voted unanimously yesterday to work towards legalizing ball hockey and other sports on city streets.
The issue will likely go to vote after the Oct. 25 municipal elections, potentially serving as one of the first issues to vote on for the new Toronto mayor.
