G20 fence costs almost twice as much as estimate

The final bill for the G20 security fence is $9.4 million, nearly double the cost initially conceived. Whoopsies.

According to Public Works spokeswoman Natalie Pennefather, the company that initially supplied the fence valued the contract at $5.4 million. But the RCMP determined that changes were required as the summit drew closer, requiring modifications to ensure better traffic flow, lighting and ease of dismantling and removal.

In total, almost 10 kilometres of fencing decorated Toronto's downtown during the summit. According to Pennefather, the fence should be fully dismantled by tomorrow.

Subsequent street sweeping of the area is estimated at [dramatic pause] one hundred billion dollars. This figure may be doubled in actuality.
