Sarah Thomson would cut absent councillors' pay
As part of her "Honest Day Policy" released today, mayoral candidate Sarah Thomson says councillors who miss meetings should have their pay reduced accordingly.
According to her plan, if councillors miss a three-hour committee meeting, for example, they would be docked three hours pay from their $99,620 annual salary. Thomson pointed out that the Senate of Canada deducts pay if senators are absent, and she believes the same sort of accountability should be upheld at City Hall.
Thomson took the opportunity to take a stab at Rob Ford saying, "This is a man who's built his platform on budgetary restraint and yet hasn't attended even one budget committee meeting in over a year. Even I have attended more budget committee meetings and I don't even work there."
Thomson's policy also includes eliminating retirement parties like the swanky soiree held for former Coun. Kyle Rae (where Smitherman didn't eat anything, he swears) and reducing councillors' discretionary budgets by 20 per cent.
