Accused subway pusher found not criminally responsible
The man accused of pushing two boys onto the subway tracks at Dufferin station last year has been found not criminally responsible for his actions.
Adenir DeOliveira was charged with three counts of attempted murder and three counts of assault for pushing three teenage boys onto the tracks (one of whom managed to catch his balance to avoid falling).
Ontario Superior Court Justice Nancy Backhouse reached a decision today: "I find that at the time he committed these acts, the accused's mind was devoid of any thoughts other than pushing the victims or killing himself." DeOliveira will not be going to jail, but instead may be detained in a hospital, be released with conditions, or be granted unconditional release, which is unlikely. The Ontario Review Board will provide a decision within 45 days.
