Radar: January 22, 2009

Top Toronto event picks for Thursday, January 22, 2009:

1. KOFFLER GALLERY presents IRIS HAUSSLER: HONEST THREADS
Koffler's first road show hits Honest Ed's with Honest Threads. Iris Haussler's interactive installation builds Toronto's stories and relationships through lending and borrowing of personal garments. I suppose a trip to Goodwill could evoke the same emotions, but I'm still oddly intrigued. Opens tonight, runs to March 8.
Honest Ed's. 581 Bloor Street W, 2nd Floor, East Wing, (416) 636-1880.
ART OPENING / 7-9pm / free / website

2. FROM "BUST" TO "BOOM" TO "ZOOM": CURATED BY MOSES ZNAIMER
Media guru Moses Znaimer curates this exhibit on aging, longevity, and a longer, more productive life. Gad, this guy is truly like CityTV: he's freaking everywhere. Opens tonight, runs to February 1.
Propeller Centre for the Arts. 984 Queen Street W, (416) 504-7142.
ART OPENING / 7-10pm / free / website

3. FILM SCREENING: NOVA THE BIBLE'S BURIED SECRETS
CFI presents NOVA's investigative documentary on the origins of the Hebrew Bible, offering evergreen trivia material for your future party needs.
Centre for Inquiry Ontario. 216 Beverley Street, (416) 971-5676.
FILM / 7-9pm / $5, $2 students, free for Friends of the Centre / website

4. ANCIENT CHINESE SECRET at THE CADILLAC LOUNGE
ACS (featuring Brian Connelly of Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet fame) plays an early set of instrumental goodies, including their version of Magnetic Fields' "Chicken With Its Head Cut Off". Particularly special, indeed.
Cadillac Lounge. 1296 Queen Street W, (416) 536-7717.
MUSIC / 730-930pm / free / website

5. MODESELEKTOR at THE SOCIAL
Berlin is eras ahead of the game when it comes to electronic/techno music; if you have any doubts, Modeselektor will prove you wrong. Highly endorsed by Thom Yorke, too, which may not mean much considering that overhyped David Gray business. Get your dancing outfit on and see for yourself.
The Social. 1100 Queen Street W, (416) 532-4474.
PARTY / 10pm / $18.50 / website

6. MARK BITTMAN IN CONVERSATION WITH MATT GALLOWAY
Mark Bittman promotes his new book Food Matters: A Guide to Conscious Eating, and discuss food, responsible eating and the influence of government and business on our food supply. CBC's Matt Galloway hosts.
Hart House East Common Room. 7 Hart House Circle, (416) 366-8973.
WORDS / 7-9pm / free / website

7. SWAP, DON'T SHOP
If you're bored of your books, comics, and music collection, bring it all here and get some other stuff in return. Even if it's equally as crappy, at least it's new. Discounted entrance fee to those who bring something they've created (band CD, 'zine, published book, mixed CD). Unclaimed items will be donated to the Toronto Public Library.
Beaver Hall Gallery. 29 McCaul Street.
OTHER / 7-10pm / $3-10 / website
