Radar: January 5, 2009

Howdy, and welcome to the premiere edition of Radar, your daily events and general kick-in-the-butt city guide. From here on in, join us every Monday to Saturday morning for the must-dos of the day.

I'm Connie, the new Radar editor, and I'm pretty excited to be here. But I gotta tell you, after a few days of scouring arts & culture pages (and burning my retinas in the process), one thing's for sure: if ever I hear someone say there's nothing to do in this city, I'll pummel 'em silly.

And now, unleash the virtual highlighters!

Catch 23 Improv
If the pressure of improv classes frightens you, don't worry. The only expectation here is to laugh and cheer on your favourite team. Improv duo Iron Cobra are the returning champs, pulling inspiration from no one, Elvis, and The Pogues. A-hunka-hunka-burnin' hilarity.
Comedy Bar, 945 Bloor Street W, (647) 898-5324.
COMEDY / 9pm / $5 / website

Rattlesnake Choir

For a night of no-frills, whiskey-assisted fun, Rattlesnake Choir provides the best soundtrack. Three sets of music and no cover? Why, hello, Monday ritual, nice to meet you.
Dakota Tavern. 249 Ossington Avenue, (416) 850-4579.
MUSIC / 1030pm / free / website

Gestation Series
This theatre-focussed reading series has now expanded to include poetry and fiction readings, too. With words like "slut" and "opening legs" sprinkled throughout their ad material, it could be an interesting night out.
The Cameron House. 408 Queen Street W, (416) 703-0811.
WORDS / 8pm / free / website

ALTdot COMedy Lounge's Coming Soon...
Here's the public audition set for the infamous ALTdot COMedy Lounge, held the first Monday of every month. Watch up-and-coming comedians that could potentially give you bragging rights when that joker makes it big.
The Rivoli. 332 Queen Street W, (416) 596-1908.
COMEDY / 11pm / free / website

Uncle Ronnie's PopUp Holiday Art Shop
The holidays are over, but this temporary installation/project/gift shop has extended its hours until January 9th. Come here to gawk at prints, sculptures, interactive art, and maybe spend that money grandma gave you last week.
Project 165. 165 Augusta Avenue.
ART / 12 - 4pm / free / website
