Events on Toronto's Radar for TUESDAY AUGUST 4, 2009â¨... lovingly handpicked from blogTO's events calendar
MUSIC | Everything All The Time and Amazing Baby at the Drake
Everything All The TIme's massive multi-keyboard setup will be hard to top when they open for Brooklyn buzz-band Amazing Baby at the Drake. With the addition of Bonjay singer Alanna Stuart on lead vox, the Toronto group is sounding better than ever.
Drake Hotel Underground, 1150 Queen St W / 8pm / $13 / 19+
ONSTAGE | The Open performs a Literary/Musical Tribute to Steve Lacy
Soprano Saxophonist Steve Lacy was a well-respected and world-renowned jazz musician, especially in avant garde and free-improvisation circles. He frequently collaborated with dancers, painters and poets in his performances, so it's fitting that this tribute (he passed away in 2003) sees his work interpreted by a trio including award winning choreographer Susanna Hood.
This Ain't The Rosedale Library, 86 Nassau St
MUSIC | Saidah Baba Talibah and Friends at the Bread & Circus
Toronto musician Saidah Baba Talibah takes a step back from her usual band of tuba, violin, cello, guitar and piano to perform an intimate acoustic concert featuring her own soulful voice as the main instrument. With special guests Hill and Slakah the Beatchild.
The Bread & Circus Theatre, 299 Augusta Avenue / PWYC
MUSIC | Fred Spek's Camp Combo
Camp Combo play a fun and somewhat bizarre blend of pop, swing, jazz and polka music, comparable to the off-beat wackiness of Spike Jones or Esquivel. They've just finished their brand-new EP "Roughin' It", so grab a copy at the show!
Mitzi's Sister, 1554 Queen St W / PWYC
BOOKS | Strong Words #51
Strong Words features live readings of fiction and poetry, with this installment featuring Toronto writers/artists Brendan Ouellette, Kyle Buckley and Yogi. Donations of new and used books will also be collected on behalf of the Toronto Public Library.
The Gladstone Art Bar, 1214 Queen Street W / 7:30pm / PWYC / 19+
MUSIC | Yeah Yeah Yeahs
New York City trio Yeah Yeah Yeahs' wild art-punk tunes have come a long way from their roots in the trashy garage-rock sound popularized by the White Stripes in the early 2000's. Their new album "It's Blitz" is filled with lush, synth-heavy ballads and the scratchy vocals of lead singer Karen O.
Kool Haus, 132 Queens Quay / $32.50 / ALL AGES
