GALLERIES | Grand Opening of Art Doll Gallery
This new gallery brings dolls out of the toy box and into the art space. The Art Doll Gallery opens today and will bring Torontonians the best in local, national and international dolls. This is an art doll gallery, not a doll art gallery, which means these works aren't just antique playthings or poseable keepsakes. They're highly detailed works meant to be displayed and the gallery is hoping to unite critics and the public in recognizing art dolls as a legitimate form.

BOOKS AND LIT | Book Launch - Hip Hop World
Dalton Higgins is a pop culture critic who's written for the Source and Vibe and regularly appears on MuchMusic. He's also the erstwhile music programmer for Harbourfront, and somehow in between all that he finds times to write books. Tonight he launches Hip Hop World, his new work about the rise of global hip hop culture and the generation of youth that spawned it. DJ Scratch, formerly of the Roots, will be spinning the tunes.

THEATRE | Great Voices
Written by Rick Salutin, Great Voices is a theatrical experience that brings history to life at Fort York. Getting an early start on marking the bicentennial of the War of 1812, the play features the voices of some of Canada's most important figures from that era, including Tecumseh, Sir Isaac Brock, and Laura Secord. Don't expect seats and a stage though, this production takes you right into the action by utilizing all the space of the fort. Runs til Sunday.

FILM | Film Screening - The Fight
They call boxing the sweet science, but it's hard to see the sweet side of the sport when you're watching two people beat each other to bloody pulps in the ring. In 2007 Panamanian artist Humberto Velez coordinated a performance piece for the Tate Modern Gallery in London that mixed boxing with music and dance to bring out the beauty of all three. Tonight the Drake screens a documentary on the making of the project and Velez, who says he's lived in a state of permanent migration since he began his artistic career, will be there to answer questions.

PARTY | Walk This Way
Nike Sportswear sponsors this retro party that takes you back to the good old days of big sneakers, nylon jackets, and neon. DJs Jedi and Spence Diamonds are manning the turntables, and you should expect plenty of the classics from Run DMC, Eazy-E and Biz Markie. Time to break out your beat boy impression and show everyone you know the words to that Grandmaster Flash song.
