FASHION | Jeremy Laing Sample Sale
The Toronto fashion blogosphere is all atwitter with news that local designer Jeremy Laing is having a one-day only sample sale today. The 27-year old is a hometown fave and has already made a splash when he debuted at New York's Fashion Week earlier this year. He's usually too expensive for most Toronto gals to afford, but today he'll be selling items from previous seasons and nothing will be over $200. Better get there early and be ready to throw some elbows and scratch out some eyes. This is probably a once in a lifetime chance, by this time next year the young designer's cachĂŠ will only have increased.

MUSIC | Chain and the Gang w/ No Gold and Slim Twig
Ian Svenonius has had a whole lot of projects over the years, singing in groups such as Make-Up, Weird War, and Nation of Ulysses. His latest band is Chain and the Gang, who sound kind of weird and sing songs about why being free sucks. Upbeat Vancouver threesome No Gold open along with Slim Twig. Twig is pretty hotly tipped for big things if you believe this city's music press, and sounds a bit like a bedroom music version of the Wu Tang Clan if ODB and the boys had grown up on the east side of Toronto instead of on Staten Island.

FILM | Free Advance Screening of the Invention of Lying
Ricky Gervais spend years labouring in obscurity before his ship finally came in. The inspiration for his smash-hit The Office was the time he spent in a soul-crushing 9 to 5 job. A record breaking podcast and a several comedy tours followed before Gervais headed to where the real money is: Hollywood movies. His first foray in Ghost Town was just this side of charming, and he tries his luck again with The Invention of Lying, in which he plays the only man who can lie in a world of truth-tellers. Presumably he learns the value of honesty and ends up with a girl much better looking than him. The movie's not in theatres yet, but Innis is hosting a free advance screening. First come first serve though, so get there early.

COMMUNITY | 7th Annual Blackfest
York University's Vanier Park hosts this celebration of the diversity and sameness of black cultures from Africa and the diaspora. With vendors, performers, and free giveaways, this a chance for students and non-students alike to celebrate their cultures and express pride in their heritage. The event is run by the York University Black Student's Alliance, which was founded after a series of racist incidences on campus and seeks to eliminate racism at Toronto's universities.

BOOKS AND LIT | Authors at Harbourfront: Tess Callahan, Liz Jensen, Lorrie Moore
A trio of talented female authors come to the Harbourfront Centre tonight to discuss their recent novels, all of which deal with female protagonists facing very tough questions about themselves. Callahan, Jensen, and Moore all have impressive bodies of work under their belts, and will be reading from their work which explore a range of what it must be said are some pretty dark topics, including anxiety in post-9/11 America, extramarital secrets, and inappropriate relationships between psychiatrists and patients. Hosted by E!Television's Rachel Harry as part of Authors at Harbourfront Centre.

MUSIC | Foxfire w/ the Do
Foxfire were once called Foxfire Forest, probably a good thing because with similarly woodland-themed bands out there like Oh No Forest Fires and Forest City Lovers, it was getting a little confusing. All it takes is seeing the band once though to convince you these guys are unique, with born performer Hannah Krapivinksy sharing the mic with ever-dreamy Neil Rankin they certainly stand out. They bring their danceable pop to Wrongbar tonight, opening for the Do, who are apparently the hottest thing in France these days.
