Events on Toronto's Radar for WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 9, 2009... lovingly handpicked from blogTO's events calendar.

FESTIVAL | Junction Arts Festival
A separate city until 1909, the Junction is the only neighbourhood of Toronto that continued to enforce prohibition throughout the 20th Century, and the sale of alcohol was banned there as late as 2000. That doesn't mean the people who live there are no fun though, and from now until Sunday the neighbourhood will be celebrating its distinct community with music, art, and plenty of food. Highlights include a concert by Jason Collett, 30 street performance groups, a juried art exhibition, and the opening party tonight in Junction Square.
Junction District, Free, 7 pm tonight

BOOKS AND LIT | This is Not a Reading Series: Film Festival Edition
Geoff Pevere and Tom McSorley feature in this timely film festival edition of This Is Not A Reading Series. McSorley, who is executive director of the Canadian Film Institute, will be discussing his book Atom Egoyan's the Adjuster, which analyzes the iconic Canadian director's fourth feature film. Acclaimed critic Geoff Pevere will be celebrating the launch of the anthology Toronto On Film, and screening some footage of our city (posing as other cities) on the silver screen.
Gladstone Hotel Ballroom, 1214 Queen St. W., $5, 7 pm

MUSIC | More or Les and Fresh Kils Video Release Party
More or Les made himself a pillar of the underground hip-hop community here in Toronto before moving to Montreal to pursue his career in 2007. Affable and witty, the Scarborough emcee teamed up with the Fresh Kils to release an EP earlier this year and tonight they unveil a music video for the single Pop n Chips. They'll be deejays spinning nothing but middle school rap in between sets too. Screw the invite-only TIFF party going on upstairs, this is where the real party's at.
Drake Underground, 1150 Queen St. W., $5, 8:30 pm

FILM| The Man Who Saved Geometry
As far as school subjects go, geometry is not really the one you imagine inspiring passion. But apparently some people really enjoy it, just ask anyone who knew Donald Coxeter. A new documentary by award winning director David New follows Coxeter on his last trip to a geometry conference in Budapest where at the age of 95 he described a proof for "four mutually tangent circles" that's been described as beautiful. A few other interesting characters pop up in the film, including Benoit Mandelbrot, the Father of Fractals himself. The Fields Institute screens a preview of the film tonight.
Fields Institute, 222 College St., Free, 4:30 pm

MUSIC| Jean Derome et les Dangereux Zhoms
Jean Derome isn't well known to most Torontonians, but in Quebec he's practically a household name. An innovative jazz musician who's known for taking sounds apart and putting them back together, Derome brings his twelve piece orchestra les Dangereux Zhoms to the atmospheric Music Gallery tonight. Derome's been at this for more than 30 years and les Zhoms are only his latest and most avant garde project.
The Music Gallery, 197 John St., $20/$10 for seniors and students

GALLERY| Somebodies
Students from the Toronto School of Art present the fruits of their labour from the Independent Residency Program tonight. Somebodies is a group exhibition focusing on both express and implicit depictions of the human body. Media includes drawing, painting, print-making, and collage, and their should be some great work on display from some of the city's fine young talent. Runs til September 20.
Launch Projects, 404 Adelaide St. W., Free, 12 pm - 5 pm

FILM | Pitch Expo 2009
Movie industry movers and shakers from all over the world are in town this week, and this event gives wannabe film makers a chance to take advantage. Grab that screenplay you've been sitting on and bring it down to Hart House today where studio execs and other dream-granters will gather to hear ideas from the undiscovered masses. It's not cheap, but it might be worth it if you've got a good idea.
Hart House, $199/$150 Students, 8:30 am - 5 pm
