Events on Toronto's Radar for FRIDAY OCTOBER 9, 2009... lovingly handpicked from blogTO's events calendar.

MUSIC | Said the Whale Instore at Criminal Records
Vancouver pop folk band Said the Whale have come a long way in two short years. Starting life as a duo in 2007, the band has since expanded into a five piece and last year played the national Canada Day celebrations on Parliament Hill as well as V-Fest. The band is just embarking on a tour to promote the release of their Islands Disappear album which drops next week, and stop in on our little burgh for a performance at Criminal Records.
Criminal Records, 493 Queen St. W., Free, 6 pm

COMEDY | The Emergency Monologues
Morgan Philips Jones works as a paramedic, which means he spends his nights mopping up blood, stitching up gaping wounds, and pushing people's intestines back in. Prime fodder for comedy, wouldn't you say? Jones has turned his experiences as an EMT into a one-man comedy show in which he relates true, often gruesome stories which provide a darkly hilarious glimpse into the secret life of this city. The show won the Audience Choice award when it debuted at last year's Summerworks festival.
Wise Daughter's Craft Market, 3079B Dundas St. W., $12, 8 pm

MUSIC | Kylie Minogue
Kylie Minogue has been making music for over 20 years so it's kind of amazing that tonight will be her first ever show in Canada. Whether or not you love her music, you've got to admire this woman's tenacity. She's reinvented herself and her music several times over the course of her career, has fought off cancer, and continues making hits two decades into her career. As of midnight last night Ticketmaster was still selling tickets for tonight's show, but if you can't get a hold of one there's also an all-night Kylie party going down in the Gay Village (where else).
Air Canada Centre, 40 Bay St., $115 and up, 8 pm

PARTY | Hawllstar's Halloween Haunt
Who cares if Halloween is still three weeks away. The Dominion on Queen East is getting its bloody licks in early with a ghoulish costume party featuring rockabilly band Big Ass Cracker and surf outfit Luau or Die. There'll also be some haunting burlesque courtesy of the Mena von Fleisch and Emmanuelle La Gitane, and the usual apple-bobbing, costume prizes, and pin the tail on the werewolf.
Dominion, 500 Queen St. E., $10, 10 pm

PARTY | Fuck the Internet
A new, aggressively lo-tech named party hits Clinton's tonight, trying to elbow its way into a very crowded Toronto retro scene. Covering tunes from the 1970s to 1995, Fuck the Internet is hoping to pack the back room at Clinton's just as well as Shake a Tail does on Saturday nights. It has a chance too, cause the cover's low and you know what you're in for. For now it's a monthly event, but if it survives til the new year look for it to become weekly.
Clinton's Tavern, 693 Bloor St. W., $5, 10 pm

FILM | Free Screening: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring
You really gotta admire those kids at Innis College. They consistently present great films to the public for no cost, and tonight is no exception. The 2003 movie Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring tells the story of life in a Buddhist monastery nestled in the Korean wilderness. Low-key and pastoral, it's not exactly a thrill a minute but it got excellent reviews. Screw the multiplex, Innis is where it's at.
Innis Town Hall, 2 Sussex Ave., Free, 7 pm

MUSIC | The Slackers at Lee's Palace
The Slackers were one of the bands of the mid-90s swing and ska revival scene, and are thus at least partially responsible for crap like this. Nearing the end of the second decade of their career, they still have a loyal enough following that they are playing a two-night stand at Lee's Palace this weekend. Also on the bill are fellow hep cats Westbound Train and Peterborough's the Venisons. Grab your best pork pie hat and come on down.
Lee's Palace, 529 Bloor St. W., $17.50, 9 pm
