ARTS AND CRAFTS | Craft Off the Lot
Last week the Cryptic Canvas gallery brought us Art Off the Lot, a pwyc exhibition and sale of works by up and coming Canadian artists. Fittingly they follow it up this week with Craft Off the Lot, with artisans from all over the country converging on an abandoned Chrysler dealership on King St. to show and sell one-of-a-kind jewellery, clothing, pillows, soap, chocolate and more. This is an artist-represented event so you'll also get a chance to interact with the artisans. Maybe you can get a handy tip on how to knit your own owl, which is an alarmingly popular hobby these days. Runs til Sunday.
1030 King St. W., PWYC ($5 suggested), Opening night 7 pm - 11pm

MUSIC | 2nd Annual Nujazz Festival
This three day festival highlights the electronic side of contemporary jazz, with performers from Germany, the U.S., and across Canada coming together to play cutting edge music. The opening concert tonight is a celebration of CIUT DJs Goldfinger and Medicineman's tenth year on the air and will include sets by New York nujazz pioneer Nickodemus and local instrumentalists Escalate. There'll be no dixieland pap or big band numbers here. This ain't your grandpa's jazz festival. Runs til Saturday.
Opening night: Revival, 783 College St., $12 advance, 9 pm

PARTY | Kap Bambino at Wrongbar
French electro duo Kap Bambino has been making waves in Europe of late on the back of thrilling live performances, addictive beats, and a wild shit-hot vocalist. The group's been praised in NME and Dazed and Confused and has toured all over the world. They bring the party to Queen W. tonight and will be joined by Kidstreet, who not only have the balls to call themselves an "acoustic/electric dance band" but are also named after the cheesiest and therefore coolest Canadian game show of all time.
Wrongbar, 1279 Queen St. W., $12.50 advance, 9 pm

MUSIC | Zeus at the Rivoli
Zeus's members had already proved themselves on the Toronto music scene before coming together to form a band of Mount Olympus-size proportions, having spent the last few years playing in the likes of 6ixty8ights, the Golden Dogs, Major Grange and Paso Mino. The Arts and Crafts rockers bring their impressive chops and sizeable tunes to the Riv tonight with Moby Dick and William Delray.
Rivoli, 334 Queen St. W., $13.50 advance, 9 pm

DANCE | ÂĄLorca! In Search of Duende
This flamenco performance is inspired by the life and death of legendary Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca. Lorca led a short but tumultuous life, falling into a hopelessly one-sided love affair with Salvador Dali that drove Lorca to depression and fueled his experimental verse. Lorca was only 38 when he fell victim to the Spanish Civil War but his work had already inspired a generation, and this show, choreographed by multi-Dora Award winner Esmerelda Enrique, seeks to reinterpret the duende (or soul) at the heart of the poet's work.
Harbourfront Centre's Fleck Dance Theatre, 207 Queens Quay W., $23-$40, Saturday - Thursday 8 pm, Sunday 3 pm

PANEL DISCUSSION | CIHR CafĂŠ Scientifique - H1N1
These days you can't turn on the news without hearing yet another terrifying story about the H1N1 virus (or "Hinny", as the kids are calling it these days). With all that info coming through the mainstream media, it's difficult to tell what's truth, what's fiction, and what's just aimed to scare the hell out of you. The Canadian Institutes for Health Research seeks to clear the air tonight with an informal and interactive panel discussion headed by a group of experts and facilitated by CBC national health reporter Maureen Taylor.
Duke of York Pub, 39 Prince Arthur Ave., 5:30 pm

BOOKS AND LIT | Black Mass #2 Launch Party
Patrick Kyle has been self-publishing comic books since 2005. A recent OCAD graduate, Kyle's work has been picked up by Vice Magazine and his regular comic book anthology Wowee Zonk has a loyal following in the city. Tonight he launches the second issue of his Black Mass comic which tells the tale of Turdswallo Blackteeft, the most pathetic man on Earth. Issue number one found poor Turdswallo on his way to visit Graceland when he got waylaid by some black wizards or some such. If the party is anything like Kyle's comics, it's gonna be weird, disturbing and a lot of fun.
Good Blood Bad Blood, 13 Kensington Ave., 8 pm
