FILM | The Question of Celebrity Film Series
In conjunction with its hugely popular Vanity Fair portrait exhibit, the ROM screens two films tonight on the subject of celebrity. First up is Annie Leibovitz: Life Through a Lens, the 2006 documentary chronicles the legendary photographer's career shooting the world's most influential people, from movie stars to politicians. The second half of the double bill is Valentino: The Last Emperor, which tells the story of Valentino Garavani, the now-retired 70-year old designer who clothed Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy. Presented by the museum's swanky Institute for Contemporary Culture.
Signy and Cleophee Eaton Theatre, Royal Ontario Museum, 100 Queens Park, $8-$15, 7 pm

CONFERENCE | Cultural Knowledge & the Healthy Society
Here's a chance for creative types to give something back to the community besides all them purtty pictures. This two day conference at the Ontario College of Art and Design brings together thinkers from the medical and design fields to chart new paths in health research. Seminars and keynote speakers will explore how designers, artists, and engineers can help create a healthier society by collaborating with health workers in areas like medical visualization, technology adaptation, charting patterns of disease. All sessions are free and you can register online at the conference's website. Runs til Wednesday.
Ontario College of Art and Design, 100 McCaul Street, Free.

DEVO | Devo at the Phoenix
The 1970s cult nerd pop band that brought the world "Whip It" comes to Toronto for the first time in 25 years tonight. The Ohio band will play shows on two back-to-back nights at the Phoenix, each a full performance of one of their classic albums. Tonight they'll be playing Q: Are We Not Men A: We Are Devo! in its entirety. The band was formed by art students in 1972 as a critique of American society that appeared to have devolved, but their greatest contribution to cultural dialogue might have been wearing really funny hats. Tickets are sold out but there should definitely be some floating around the venue.
Phoenix Concert Theatre, 410 Sherbourne St., $48.25, 8 pm

BOOKS AND LIT | TSAR Annual Book Launch
Each year TSAR Books publishes six to eight books of fiction, nonfiction and poetry that reflects the global character of Canada's increasingly diverse society. Tonight the publishing house celebrates its 2010 crop with a party at the Gladstone that will feature readings from the new works. Authors in attendance include Jamaican-Canadian author Olive Senior, whose collection of short stories The Arrival of the Snake Woman spans 150 years of the Caribbean island's history, and Shaista Justin, whose new book of poetry has been praised by South African literary heavyweight JM Coetzee.
Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen St. W., Free, 7 pm

MUSIC | Fuck Buttons at the El Mocambo
I still remember being startled the first time I heard the word "bitch" said on prime time TV when I was a teenager. But over the last decade bands have made a concerted effort to make "fuck" as acceptable as ass, bitch, and douche. Fucked Up, Holy Fuck, Fuck Buttons... we get it already: "fuck" is now ok to say, and also, I am old and cranky. UK electronic duo Fuck Buttons are currently touring in support of their critically-acclaimed sophomore album Tarot Sport and hit up the El Mo tonight.
El Mocambo, 464 Spadina Ave., $10, 9 pm
