MUSIC | Camera Obscura at the Phoenix
Scottish 60's throwbacks Camera Obscura are one of the most successful acts to come out of Glasgow in the last two decades. Blending the heartsick naivety of early girl groups with a modern pop sensibility, the Glaswegians have been charming their way into the hearts of music fans for thirteen years. Touring in support of their well-received fourth studio album My Maudlin Career, the band comes to the Phoenix tonight.

PHOTOGRAPHY | Photorama 2009
For 23 years the Photorama event has showcased the work of some of this country's best photographers. The exhibition and sale is the annual fundraising event for Gallery TPW and this year features a new photograph by the amazing Edward Burtynsky, whose photos of industrial landscapes have made him world famous. The four day event starts tonight with a gallery members-only preview and runs all weekend. The gallery is hoping to raise $30,000 for the expansion of its operations and community-building events.

MUSIC | D-Sisive's Jonestown Release Party
Toronto hip hop star D-Sisive has had a long and painful road to success. He first began releasing singles in the late 1990s, but following the death of his father in 2001 he fell into a depression that stalled his career for six years. In 2008 he emerged from writers' block and released two albums in quick succession. One was nominated for a Juno and the other for the Polaris Prize. His third record Jonestown drops this week and he's throwing a party with comedian Calcu-Lator & the Oral Presentation and rapper Muneshine to celebrate. Attendees get a free deluxe album edition download card.

BOOKS AND LIT | The Best Canadian Essays 2009
Every year we have awards shows celebrating movies and music, so why not essays? This party with an IQ marks the launch of The Best Canadian Essays 2009, the inaugural edition of a compilation of this country's short nonfiction. Editors Alex Boyd and Carmine Starnino have chosen 14 works for the publication, and tonight there will be readings from contributors including Quill and Quire's Nathan Whitlock, feminist porn proponent Alison Lee, and arts writer Kamal Al-Solyalee.

MUSIC | Queens of Country
Enough of this "Stand by Your Man" bullshit. Tonight at Grossman's the ongoing Ladyfest festival pays tribute to the Queens of Country the way only feminists can. Amy Campbell, Brescia Birdthroat Bloodbeard, and Kay Pettigrew will be singing the songs of history's greatest cowgirls including Patsy Cline, Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton. Steers and Queers Djs Sigourney Beaver and Leanne Grimes will be spinning the tunes and there may even be some country karaoke.

FUNDRAISER | Art Attack: An Auction in Support of Buddies in Bad Times
For thirty years, Buddies in Bad Times has promoted queer culture in the heart of Toronto's gay village. But pushing boundaries for three decades is expensive work and each year Buddies hosts Art Attack, an auction to raise funds for its unique programming. This year they've gone to great lengths to find cutting edge contemporary art that reflects their forward-thinking mandate, and it will all be auctioned off tonight. A great chance to pick up an interesting piece (of art that is) while supporting a vital part of our city.
