FESTIVAL

The ALL CAPS! Island Festival 2012
It's never a true Canadian summer without a lake, bonfires and a camping trip so we're happy to see the return of The ALL CAPS! Island Festival. Happening on Toronto Island all weekend, ALL CAPS! features indie music, art installations, swimming and camping for those who want to bring a bit of the wilderness to the city. Presented by Wavelength Music Series, the event will feature local music acts like Sonic Titan, Choir! Choir! Choir!, Canadian Winter and A Place To Bury Strangers as well as plenty of art exhibits and food vendors. This is a festival worth shouting about.

Blackout Fest
If you're not up for trekking to the Island but still crave a cultural (if not musical) experience, Blackout Fest could go on your calendar. Featuring 35 artists working in a variety of media, the event seeks to foster artistic community through putting interactivity at the forefront. In other words, this isn't about staring at paintings on a wall som much as engage with other creative types.

FILM

Christie Pits Film Festival--Rebel Without A Cause
The little film festival that could screens its audience choice flick Sunday in the final screening of the summer season. The 1955 James Dean classic Rebel Without A Cause, a film about a rebellious teenager who makes some enemies in his new town, will play in Christie Pits Park beginning 15 minutes after sundown. As always, the event is a BYOblanket, pay-what-you-can event.

Loftnight: The Drive-In
The elusive LOFT Headquarters hosts a "drive-in" movie tonight at Queen and Dufferin with a 20-foot projection screen playing a double bill of fight-to-the-death teen flicks. After sundown, Battle Royale, a 2000 Japanese film about a class of grade nine students selected by the government to kill one another off in a televised battle, will be screened followed by the 1990 adaptation of William Golding's Lord of the Flies, a classic tale about schoolchildren living on a deserted island and their slow descent to uncivilized depths. These movies aren't your little sister's Hunger Games.

FOOD

Taste of the Danforth
While the line-ups and the predictability of the food tend to draw their fair share of complaints every year, if you like being where the action is, Taste of the Danforth is the ticket. One of the biggest food festivals of the year, so long as you manage your expectations, fun and bold flavours await.
Runs tonight 6pm-12am, Saturday 12pm-12am, Sunday 12pm-8pm.

Bastid's BBQ 2012
BBQ lovers will be happy to hear of the return of Bastid's BBQ at Steam Whistle Brewery this Saturday night. With an upgraded menu of bolder and tastier foods, DJ Skratch Bastid promises that his annual BBQ will be better than the last with an extensive menu, wing-eating competitions (with cash prizes!) and sets by DJs like BadBadNotGood, Wrispect and Lucie Tic. Get there early to guarantee yourself a foot in the door.

Foodies on Foot Favourites Tour
A tour that only food writers experience and foodies can only dream about, Foodies on Foot takes Torontonians on a delicious journey through the city to find the hidden gems that only industry insiders know about. No two FoF tours are the same with walkers exploring different neighbourhoods and new merchants each time. This secret supper club walking tour lasts approximately 4 hours and is not for the faint of stomach.

FUNDRAISER

The Booty Bash
Back your booties, butts and behinds up on the dance floor because The Booty Bash is back to raise cash for colon cancer awareness and prevention! An event started by the McQuaig family to honour the loss of their faither Don McQuaig to colon cancer, The Booty Bash has raised over $300,000 since its inception. This 5th annual bash will see donations going toward screening clinics for the purpose of outfitting them with the appropriate tools to catch cancer early. Come shake your booty for a cause!

FASHION

Chop Up Shop
A market for those who take pleasure in other men's junk, Chop Up Shop opens this Saturday afternoon to sell the contents of the closets and living rooms of your fellow Torontonians. Everyone is a vendor and welcome to participate in this community pop-up market at Queen and Ossington where food by Shinaki-Co will be served and Sean Brown will head up musical affairs. Event happens rain or shine!

MUSIC

Heavy T.O.
Metalheads invade Downsview this weekend for the heaviest of metal shows with acts like Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Deftones, System of a Down, Lamb of God and Protest the Hero performing. A two-day event featuring over 20 acts, festival passes are reasonably priced (for a Toronto festival) and somehow still not sold out. Prices increase at the door so purchase ahead of time through Ticketmaster.

ART

of a day
The Critical Curatorial Lab at U of T hosts its group art show of a day tonight at the historical residence of 1 Spadina Crescent. 19 local artists exhibit photographic, video, performance and visual works that explore the relationship between moments that are transient and pedestrian. of a day lasts only of a day. Stop in for a fleeting moment before it's gone.

THEATRE

FACTS
An American archaeologist is murdered in the West Bank and an Israeli and Palestinian detective are put on the case in Arthur Milner's FACTS, opening at SummerWorks Festival tonight. A witty and intelligent look at Palestinian-Israeli relations, FACTS bravely attempts to answer difficult political questions about the nations' tensions. Milner has set plans to tour the West Bank and Israel with the play in the fall but for now it will be on stage at Factory Theatre until August 18th.
