Weekend events in Toronto: March 4-6 2016

Weekend events in Toronto include several of the month's top concerts, so good news for music junkies. With F*cked Up, Ty Segall, Beach House and more slated to hit stages across the city, you've got plenty of options. Toronto's 182nd birthday is also happening this weekend, and you can get in on the celebration by heading to Steam Whistle brewery for an all-out bash.

MUSIC

Wintersleep (March 4)
The day their sixth album, The Great Detachment, officially hits stores, Halifax indie darlings Wintersleep will be playing a sold-out show at Lee's Palace. The local branch of Dine Alone is putting it out, so it's apt that the release party of sorts can take place in T.O.

Fucked Up (March 4)
Back in 2011, hardcore luminaries Fucked Up connected with the Images Festival to perform a live original film score for the 1928 silent film West of Zanzibar. It worked out so well that the band decided to commit it to record - it comes out on vinyl April 15, but they'll perform this encore sooner.

Ty Segall (March 4)
Garage rocker Ty Segall, who is really committed to this whole lo-fi-retro thing, must grace the stage of the Danforth in honour of new solo release Emotional Mugger.

Beach House (March 5-6)
Dream pop is so big and good right now that this Baltimore duo struck while the iron was hot, releasing not one, but two acclaimed albums last year. A big tour similarly affords us a double dose over two nights at the Danforth. if you couldn't get tickets, try to sneak into the just-announced "installation" show.

New Creations Festival (March 5-12)
In the market for something more high brow than an indie show at the Horseshoe? The New Creations Festival will help you get in touch with your more sophisticated side with its roster of avant-garde contemporary music shows. With everything from trumpet concertos to DJ performances on tap, you've got plenty of options.

Bell Witch (March 6)
The doomiest calendar entry, Soybomb's next party is the best bet for 20-minute songs, down-tuned everything and a general sense of suffocating, impending dread. Fun! Headliners Bell Witch are joined by Chicago's Wrekmeister Harmonies and Toronto's own one-man doom factory, Gates.

ENTERTAINMENT

Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival (March 3-13)
Kick off the month with some laughs by attending the Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival. The event offers 12 days of live, scripted comedy shows by some of the funniest comedians in the country. Performing troupes include Hello! Thunder Bay, Laugh Sabbath, and This is That.

Toronto International Bicycle Show (March 4-6)
Jonesing to get back on your bike? Unfortunately, the weather isn't looking so great, but you can still get your fix at the Toronto International Bicycle Show. Head to the Better Living Centre this weekend to check out new gear, see demonstrations and catch BMX and mountain bike freestyle riders do their thing.

Spielberg-Lesque (March 5)
Burlesque shows and clubs have become pretty popular in Toronto. If you like your shows a little on the quirky side, head to The Great Hall this Saturday for a Steven Spielberg twist on the classic peepshow.

Celebrate Toronto (March 5)
On March 5th, non-profit organization Celebrate Toronto will transform the Steam Whistle brewery into an entertainment hub in honour of the city's 182nd birthday. The party will highlight Toronto's past, present and future and bring out plenty of Toronto-based entertainers, artists and vendors.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

Art Feminism Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon (March 5)
International Women's Day lands on the 8th, but a few events are happening early. As we all know from school guidelines, Wikipedia is not a credible source - but that doesn't stop people from using it. On March 5 celebrate International Women's Day by taking to your laptop to bulk up Wiki pages on art and feminism with actual facts from the AGO's artist files and books.

All Women Rise Up: Rally, March & Fair (March 5)
Organized by the Centre for Women and Trans People, this event promotes equality on all fronts (the event's mantra is no to violence and hate, no to racism and islamophobia and no to poverty). Once you've finished rallying, head to Let's Be Frank on Spadina for an after party.

FILM

TIRFF 2016: 6th Annual Toronto Irish Film Festival (March 4-6)
The Toronto Irish Film Festival is taking over the TIFF Bell Lightbox for its 6th year this weekend. If you're in the market for some Irish entertainment pre-St. Patrick's Day, this should do the trick. Check out the programme for more info.

Labyrinth Quote-Along (March 5)
Pay homage to the late and great David Bowie by quoting along with his cinematic masterpiece Labyrinth at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema. There will be prop items available and plenty of snacks.

Fifth Element Film Screening & Discussion & Dance Party (March 6)
This PWYC event will keep your Sunday night schedule filled. You'll get to scope out (and buy) goods made by local vendors, catch a screening of Fifth Element and a get in on a post-screening dance party; basically, it's the ultimate trifecta of weekend fun.

SHOPPING

Toronto Antique and Vintage Market and The Toronto Vintage Clothing (March 5-6)
The Toronto Vintage Clothing show is taking over the Queen Elizabeth Building in Exhibition Place on this weekend. You'll have the chance to check out retro clothing, designer handbags, jewelry and have access to the Toronto Antique & Vintage Market.
