Niagara Falls announces details for unreal holiday lights festival

Light festivals have become a winter holiday staple, and now you can explore a massive lights festival at Niagara Falls next month.

The Winter Festival of Lights is back this year for its 40th year as Canada's largest free outdoor light festival.

Just like last year, the Winter Festival of Lights is an outdoor, self-guided lights festival where visitors can either walk or drive through the surreal experience.

Niagara Falls will be transformed into a twinkling winter wonderland for 101 nights with over 3 million lights and more than 50 larger-than-life displays.

Displays will be based on four different themes including Royal Promenade, Frosted Falls, Enchanted Forest and great Canadian North. The festival will also feature the two-storey tall Zimmerman Fountain, a gingerbread house and a 60-foot light tunnel.

Just like last year, there will be indoor family-friendly entertainment at different venues every weekend, featuring a hot chocolate trail. The indoor activities will allow visitors to defrost along the route. The event schedule has not been released yet but is set to be posted soon.

Trees wrapped in lights will lead you through the 8-km route through different displays along the Niagara Parkway through Dufferin Islands and into tourist districts of Fallsview Boulevard, Lundy's Lane and Downtown Niagara Falls.

Make sure to bundle up before heading out or if you're not big of a fan of the cold, it's recommended to drive through the route and then park to grab a few photos of the displays.

No need for reservations or tickets as the lights festival is completely free.

The Winter Festival of Lights is back on November 12 through February 20.
