It's no secret that 2024 was a banner year for solar eclipses in Ontario, with the southern part of the province bearing witness (if you could see through the clouds, that is) to a rare total solar eclipse this past April, but 2025 still has some cool celestial events — including eclipses! — in store.

Eclipses

While Toronto won't see another total solar eclipse until 2099 (hang on to those glasses!), there is a partial solar eclipse happening on March 29, 2025, which will be visible to much of North America.

There's another one set to happen on Sept. 21, too, but you'll have to travel to Southern Australia or Antarctica to see it happen.

March is shaping up to be a big month to keep your eyes on the skies in Ontario, because there's also a total lunar eclipse that'll be visible across North America happening overnight between March 13 and 14, and is expected to reach its peak over Toronto at 2:58 a.m.

Meteor showers

If you're hoping to do a little extra sky-spotting, you can also catch the Perseid meteor shower, which will be lighting up the night sky between July 17 and Aug. 24 this summer, peaking on Aug. 12.

Other meteor showers in 2025 will be happening from April 15 to April 30, April 25 to May 21, July 18 to Aug. 12, Sept. 23 to Nov. 4, Oct. 2 to Nov. 12, Oct. 13 to Dec. 1 and Nov. 3 to Dec. 2.

Supermoons

Ever look up at the night sky and be totally staggered by the size of the moon? Supermoons are truly spectacular events that happen multiple times every year, so 2025 will be no different.

This year, you can count on just two supermoons, in the Beaver Moon on Nov. 5 and the Cold Moon on Dec. 4.
