cat festival toronto

One of the world's largest cat festivals is coming to Toronto

Cat-lovers across Toronto, prepare for the purrr-fect weekend, as Catstravaganza returns to the city.

I'll be honest; I've always been a considerably larger dog person than a cat fan, but that's not entirely the fault of felines.

Fated with a particularly feisty black cat who, when I was a small child, took great pleasure in treating me as her own personal scratching post and later developing a major allery to her dander which prompted an extended vacation at someone else's house (which lasted the rest of her life), it's only natural that my affections teetered in the direction of dopey, non-shedding dogs.

I never quite stopped having a soft-spot for cats, though, which is why, in lieu of having a cat of my own (which would ultimately spell disaster on a number of fronts), Toronto's biggest and best cat festival and show makes a mighty fine substitute.

This March, Catstravaganza is prowling back to Toronto for a weekend chock-full of all things furry and feline.

Founded and run by Steven Merserve, who's gained quite the internet following for doing exactly this, and his organization Loving Cats Worldwide (LCWW), the festival features a slew of events that are catnip for cat-lovers.

The festival is just one of a host of cat-themed festivals and competitions held by LCWW year-round, with stops planned everywhere from Florida to Sydney, Australia in the coming months.

At Catstravaganza, you can watch on as both pedigree and household cats alike go head-to-head in competition categories like Best Kitten, Best Cat and Best Household Pet. At the end of the entire weekend, the prestigious Best In Show will be crowned.

You can even enter your own cat, if you think they have what it takes to claw the competition.

On top of the competition, you'll also be able to chat with and hear from cat experts and renowned breeders over the course of the event, meet some seriously cute kitties and shop a vendor market with some goodies your pet is sure to love.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 1 and 2 at the Queen Elizabeth Building, and tickets are on sale now, ranging from $20 for children to $30 for adults.

You can bet your bottom dollar that, this year, I'll be doubling up on my usual Claritin dose and heading down for a fur-bulous time, getting my fill of cute kitties in lieu of adopting my own.
