Toronto neighbourhood has mixed feelings over new condo development
A new condo development in Toronto is causing mixed reactions from local residents, with some welcoming the idea of increased housing in the area, and others who criticized the proposal's "lack of parking" and effects on the environment.
In a post to a community Facebook group, one resident shared a notice of development sign for an upcoming 11-storey building at the corner of Kingston Road and Beech Avenue.
The mixed-use condominium building is proposed to sit at the corner of Glen Stewart Ravine, and will feature retail at street level and 99 residential units above.
The condo is being designed by Teeple Architects for Gabrielle Homes Ltd., whose work includes the Nobu Residences, Bianca Condos, and Picasso on Richmond.
"Heartbreaking to hear about another condo development that will be out of reach in price for most, create more traffic problems, destroy another habitat for animals but hey, another developer gets richer and poor old Toronto gets poorer in all ways for humans and wildlife," one resident wrote.
"Great news! More density. We need it," another person said. "Exciting! Great location for more people to the area," one person chimed in.
"All Kingston Road right up to Pickering will feel like you're driving through downtown TO, with all these tall buildings popping up on either side of the road now," one comment reads.
"Only a third of the residents are going to have parking? That's going to create quite the mess," another resident wrote.
The notice of development sign includes 847, 849, 851, and 855 Kingston Road as part of the proposal, and reveals that the building will boast only 32 parking spots for cars and 109 spots for bikes.
