Toronto's future tallest intersection is not where you'd think
What is now Toronto's Financial District has been home to the city's tallest buildings since the dawn of the skyscraper era, but the centre of gravity appears to be shifting away from the core of bank towers as new height clusters emerge.
Yonge Street is rapidly replacing Bay Street as Toronto's most vertical corridor, and the two tallest buildings approved in the entire country are currently under construction at Yonge and Bloor and Yonge and Queens Quay.
But it's an emerging pocket of proposed and under-construction towers between these two points that is shaping up to be the city's most Manhattan-esque, centred around the intersection of… Yonge and Gerrard?
That's right. Yonge and Gerrard.
The intersection was forever transformed in 2015 with the gargantuan Aura at College Park development. Its 272-metre, 78-storey height set the precedent for a subsequent wave of proposals that will soon morph the local skyline into one that rivals the Financial District.
Digital marketer Stephen Velasco has been tracking the progress of Toronto's vertical growth for well over a decade, and recently highlighted some of the sweeping changes on the horizon and already underway in the Yonge and Gerrard area.
Here is a preview of what to expect from the Yonge and Gerrard skyline in the years to come.
The halted YSL project was purchased by Concord and is now under construction under the Concord Sky branding. The condo tower will rise 85 storeys to a height of 299 metres, which would stand as the city's tallest building if completed today.
This future four-tower complex — proposed to replace the current Chelsea Hotel — includes an 86-storey building proposed to reach a height of 283 metres.
The most recent tall building proposed for the area is a condo tower planned to rise 75 storeys or 252 metres from the northeast corner of Yonge and Gerrard.
A similar height is proposed on the opposing southwest corner, planned to rise 248 metres and contain 74 storeys of condos.
A proposed 66-storey mixed-use tower is planned to replace the current 19-storey office tower at 415 Yonge, set to ascend to a height of 231 metres.
This 69-storey condo tower recently began construction at the corner of Yonge and Elm, and will eventually tower 218 metres above the intersection.
So move over, King and Bay, because there's a new height peak moving into town, and it's quickly coming for your crown.
