General Public
General Public is from the people behind Le Swan, Bar Vendetta and Grey Gardens — restaurateur Jen Agg along with Jake Skakun, David Greig and James Stanton acting as the wine director, beverage director and executive chef, respectively.
Located on Geary Avenue, the restaurant's unassuming exterior belies a beautiful if somewhat eclectic interior. The restaurant is split into two floors, separated by a large wood-and-metal staircase.
The main floor is decorated with rich greens and browns, while the mezzanine is painted with dreamy whites and pinks. Glass lamps and hanging greenery can be found throughout the building.
Agg describes the space as a cross between a "fancy British pub" and a " '80s inspired cocaine-slash-disco, mirrors-and-crystal peach fantasy", commenting on the way that the two seemingly disparate aesthetics are able to achieve a harmonious balance.
Be on the lookout for General Public's mascot, an adorable guinea pig with a penchant for playing dress up. This cheeky little critter can be found on the restaurant's tableware, wearing a captain's hat, and on the cocktail menu, dressed as a waiter.
Agg explains that the character was created as a nod to the restaurant's initials, as well as the children's TV show Tales of the Riverbank, which featured a guinea pig character named GP.
Though General Public was originally intended as a high end counterpoint to the bars and breweries on Geary Avenue, Agg argues that the restaurant can be both casual and upscale depending on how you choose to engage with it.
"It's very 'choose your own adventure'," she remarks. "You can get a burger with a pint at the bar, or a seafood tower with white burgundy."
As such, General Public's menu runs the gamut from simple to show-stopping.
Most dishes are inspired by traditional English pub fare, but others are inspired by international influences, such as curried lamb and escargot. The rainbow trout tartare ($24) is an inventive take on seafood tartare, seasoned with brown butter, chopped almonds and capers.
The GP Burger ($21) is a staple of General Public's happy hour menu, as well as one of the most popular items on offer.
Designed to resemble a fast food cheeseburger, this burger uses Red Leicester sauce in lieu of processed cheese and brisket in place of ground beef. The dish is finished with white onions and a sesame seed bun.
Fish and chips ($28) is a quintessential comfort dish, served with tartar sauce, malt vinegar and sliced lemons.
The Cumberland sausage ($23) is an enormous piece of pork, seasoned with a variety of herbs and spices. It sits atop a mountain of mashed potatoes, with a pool of savoury onion jus on the side.
The Eton Fizz ($18) is a light, frothy cocktail that combines gin, eton cordial, and tonka beans with lemon juice, egg white and cream. Its sweet flavour and milkshake-like consistency makes it easy to forget that it's alcoholic.
Night School ($22) is a cognac-based cocktail, infused with fenugreek, sweet vermouth, chocolate bitters and coffee liqueur.
Call the Whole Thing Off ($16) is a savoury, herbal drink, made with gin, vermouth, capers, tomatoes and tonic water. The cocktail is served over chunky, spherical pieces of ice, giving the otherwise colourless drink a slightly more whimsical feel.
General Public is located at 201 Geary Avenue.
