General Public

General Public is from the people behind Le Swan, Bar Vendetta and Grey Gardens — restaurateur Jen Agg along with Jake Skakun, David Greig and James Stanton acting as the wine director, beverage director and executive chef, respectively.

Located on Geary Avenue, the restaurant's unassuming exterior belies a beautiful if somewhat eclectic interior. The restaurant is split into two floors, separated by a large wood-and-metal staircase.

The main floor is decorated with rich greens and browns, while the mezzanine is painted with dreamy whites and pinks. Glass lamps and hanging greenery can be found throughout the building.

general public torontoAgg describes the space as a cross between a "fancy British pub" and a " '80s inspired cocaine-slash-disco, mirrors-and-crystal peach fantasy", commenting on the way that the two seemingly disparate aesthetics are able to achieve a harmonious balance.

general public torontoAgg explains that the character was created as a nod to the restaurant's initials, as well as the children's TV show Tales of the Riverbank, which featured a guinea pig character named GP.

general public torontoThough General Public was originally intended as a high end counterpoint to the bars and breweries on Geary Avenue, Agg argues that the restaurant can be both casual and upscale depending on how you choose to engage with it.

"It's very 'choose your own adventure'," she remarks. "You can get a burger with a pint at the bar, or a seafood tower with white burgundy."
