Happy Burger

Happy Burger is a minimalist takeout-only smash burger joint that also serves up hot dogs, pastrami burgers and vegan burgers.

A chef who's previously cooked at Greek restaurants Mamakas and Koukla brings his food expertise to this more casual project.

The quirky side street space that was once covered in pink as BBs Diner is now sleek black and white.

Focus is kept on cooking indoors with no seating, just a subway-tiled area for standing, ordering and waiting. A big window is suitable for ordering from outside and getting a glimpse of the burger-making operation.

Every all-beef burger patty gets lots of seasoning and a fresh smash on the griddle with an intense grill press, creating very crispy and crunchy edges.

They're all presented on squishy yellow Martin's potato rolls with a mustardy "Happy Sauce," crispy shredded lettuce on the bottom so it doesn't get too soggy.

A regular Happy Cheeseburger ($6.95) also comes with melty American cheese, tomato, onion and crunchy pickles.

The Happy Chicken ($8.95) competes well with the burger, snowy white breast meat that gets dunked in pickle brine, buttermilk and flour for an extra crispy, tangy coating. This comes with cheese, lettuce, pickles and Happy Sauce.

Happy Dogs ($5.45) are tasty, world-famous Nathan's all-beef hot dogs split down the middle and griddled for a full meaty flavour and crispy texture. On potato buns, they come simply dressed with a juicy pickle spear, onion and Happy Sauce. Make it a Super Happy Dog with cheese and bacon.

The Pastrami Burger ($10.95) tops a smashed patty with thinly sliced steamed pastrami, which ups the meaty, juicy flavour of these burgers even more. With all the usual toppings, this is the more out-of-the-box option to try.

Featured is the Oklahoma Onion Burger ($6.95), an imitation of a regional style of burger originally developed to fill out a thinner meat patty with lots of onions.

Both patty and thinly sliced onions are smashed onto the griddle together, resulting in a deeply caramelized, sweet combination topped with cheese, pickles and mustard.

Waffle fries ($4.45) aren't made here but they are thick, well seasoned and made from fluffy Idaho potatoes. Any item can be made into a combo with a side.

Cajun waffle fries are the same price but come dusted with a spicy, smoky, sweet cajun seasoning.

Onion rings ($5.45) are sweetly onion-y and don't fall apart. I highly recommend a thick sour cream and chive dip ($2) with these.

The only "dine-in" option is two picnic tables for when the weather is fair, a bench with no table off to the side.
