KaKa All You Can Eat on Bay
KaKa All You Can Eat, arguably the most hyped Japanese AYCE north of the city, has a second location in Toronto near Bay and Dundas.
The place is massive and sleek. Renovations turned the place, formerly Sushi Queen Izakaya, into a modern restaurant that is way better that most downtown AYCE options.
The AYCE here is priced at a premium, at $34.99 for weekday dinners and weekend all day.
For that price you'll find many offerings that aren't on most AYCE sushi menus. Case in point, the Albacore Tuna Tartare is a beautiful concoction of tuna tartare enveloped with avocado, cilantro, wonton chips, tomato and a drizzle of citrus dashi soy vinaigrette.
The restaurant's lineup of tataki items is also pretty impressive. The Seared Ahi Tuna Tatami comes with s mustard miso dressing. It's equal parts delicious and pretty.
The Beef Tataki sees perfectly grilled meat paired with garlic chips and a light lemon crema.
A must order is Head Chef Frank Liu’s signature roll. Aptly called Chef Frank Special, it's an indulgent maki with salmon, Hokkaido scallop, fake crab meat salad, avocado and spicy mayo with unagi sauce.
The Poke Roll doesn't really remind me of a poke bowl. It comes with salmon, tuna, tempura shrimp, avocado, cucumber and chili mayo.
Since it's AYCE you might as well order a platter of sashimi. The selection is standard with items like shrimp, fake crab, butterfish and salmon.
Asian-inspired tacos? Why not! The Beef Taco comes in a hard shell layered with kalbi sauce and roasted tomatoes.
Torched pressed sushi, also known as aburi oshi nigiri, is probably the thing to get here. I like the salmon pressed sushi with spicy serrano peppers and kimchi mayo.
KaKa also features rotating seasonal menu items like this special Rainbow Roll, a rice-less roll with asparagus, soy pepper, salmon, tuna and butterfish.
Or, there's the ridiculously over the top Golden Dust Roll, a combination of unagi and foie gras topped with real gold dust.To drink there's a Sake Jello (+$10). It reminds me of an Asian version of jello shooters but with a bit more class.
Whatever you do, save room for dessert as KaKa has their own dessert counter where all items are included in the meal. I like the Crème Brulee which comes in vanilla and green tea. It's a nice end to what is probably Toronto's fanciest AYCE sushi experience.
