Moonmilk
Moonmilk is nestled in the heart of Brockton Village, churning out unexpected flavours with an Asian touch.
Owners Sally Davingnon and Elysia Leung are no amateurs when it comes to ice cream, having met while at Bakerbots, the sister of Ossington favourite ice cream shop Bang Bang.
"We've always talked about doing something together," Leung explained to blogTO. "Sally messaged me during the pandemic and we just decided to do it."
They originally started out with doing scoops out of Davignon's backyard in the summer of 2022 with a simple sign on the sidewalk directing people where to go.
They put their heads together and worked on the shop, doing a lot of the renovations themselves, including tiling and building cabinets.
It's an open space, with bright blue cement stoop-style seating running along the floor-to-ceiling windows.
The flavour offerings lean nostalgic with an intention to be surprising. "We're passionate about creating interesting combinations," explains Leung.
Pulling from each of their unique upbringings and time spent abroad, there are nods to Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Italy.
In particular, Kaya Jam & Toast (this tastes like a Ritz peanut butter sandwich), Jasmine Taro, Blueberry Oolong, and BLT (Berry, Lemon, Trifle) are all fun and exciting flavours worth trying.
Single scoops are $5.50, doubles are $8.50, ice cream buns run for $7.50, and you can grab pints for $13. A total of 12 flavours are available (with a promise to have a third of them be vegan).
They also have these pretty Ombré Ice Cream Cubes ($5.75) that come with three flavours and a sugar cone crust- the taro, blueberry, vanilla cube is picture perfect.
What makes Moonmilk special are their cake offerings. Leung has spent time heading the baking operations at Bakerbots and has developed a daily rotating cake menu for the shop.
Baked fresh in the morning, they're made of three layers of sponge or chiffon cake, German buttercream, and incorporate seasonal fruit. A rectangular slice will run you $5.85 or you can order a whole cake instead.
During our visit, the two daily cakes were Mocha Almond Fudge, am homage to the classic Baskin Robbins flavour, and Blueberry Cream Cheese with basil jam, cream cheese, and buttercream.
They're light, not too sweet, and the perfect size for a sweet snack.
Leung has also created Moon Buns ($5.85), a milk bread that looks like a huge choux filled with pastry cream and housemade jam, akin to a jelly donut.
All the cookies ($2.75) are vegan and remind me of school cafeteria cookies in the best way.
For Davignon, scooping ice cream has been a lifelong journey. From her first job to owning her own shop, the intention has always stayed the same.
"I love making ice cream. I just want everyone to have a nice time while here," she hopes.
Moonmilk is located at 1695 Dundas St W. Open Wednesday-Sunday.
