Muni Robata Toronto

Muni Robata

Muni Robata takes its name from the traditional robata open flame grill that's central to the gourmet Japanese cuisine served here.

The sharing-style menu is rounded out by a selection of sushi, tempura, oysters and traditional Japanese kamameshi kettle rice.

The former more casual Ematei izakaya has been transformed with fluffy fauna, plush seating, a six-seat bar and dark-coloured, richly textured walls.

A small hamachi truffle starter is pricey at $19, but packs a punch thanks to the fragrance and flavour of truffle and yuzu truffle dressing, as well as the unrivalled texture of thinly sliced yellowtail.

Rock shrimp tempura ($15) is part of a collection of high-end tempura offerings such as jumbo black tiger prawn and lobster tail.

Batter is light and airy and the shrimp is sweet and juicy, set off by shiso, a bright citrus mayo and a squeeze of a lime wedge.

I highly recommend an 8oz yuzu miso black cod ($32) from the robata grill section of the menu.

Presented sheltered by a dried leaf, it's accompanied by pickled ginger and a buttery yuzu miso sauce that only further brings out the succulence of the marinated fish.

There's also a full rack of pork ribs ($29) smothered in a sweet and sticky chili sauce and crunchy crushed cashew. Again, a squeeze of lime serves to lift and awaken flavours.

Veggie truffle mushroom kamameshi ($19) manages to come out of left field despite its tableside presentation.

The elevated version of a humble dish comes off like a luxurious risotto, laced with rich truffle butter and studded with earthy veggies.

Other kamameshi options include shrimp and king crab, all meant to serve two people.

An espresso martini ($17) is one of a couple of classic cocktails on the drink menu, served in a large glass chalice that cups the aromas of combined coffee, Kahlua and vodka.

A citrus sochu highball ($17) from a list of innovative signature cocktails combines house citrus sochu steeped behind the bar with tonic for an orange-y and crushable option.

Sake flights, beer, wine, Japanese whisky and high-end champagne are also on offer.

The tucked away location of this moody restaurant in an area saturated with offices and residences makes it a gem for midday lunch specials and romantic dinners alike.
