Papi Chulo's

Papi Chulo's serves a menu of tacos, tequila and salads, a Mexican snack bar from the same folks behind Greek & Co.

It's their first licensed venture, and they're going at it full throttle with margaritas, tequila shots and Palomas galore.

Chips and guac ($7) are made in house, the guacamole more of a puree than some more chunky varieties.

Dry rub wings ($7) make for a cheap start to a meal that's light, yet flavourful. Three-quarters of a pound is smaller, but has more (smaller) wings than usual so they're easy to share. Coated in a zesty, mildly spicy rub with a hint of citrus, they're served with a thick, cooling sauce on the side.

Fries Supreme ($8) are a surprising standout, probably due to the hand-cut fries that are delivered fresh every day from Greek & Co. With tangy crema, melty queso, pico, large slices of jalapeno and pico, it's a faithful rendition of the Taco Bell classic.

A kale corn salad is one of a few $9.99 salads and bowls, chopped lettuce and kale topped with corn, pickled red onion, pico and a chili lime dressing. Like the fries, this can be optionally topped with chicken or carnitas, and, though the dressing is good, the kale could be further treated to have a less raw feel.

A fish taco ($5.99) is one of about a half dozen taco options, a thickly battered but crispy piece of halibut topped with red cabbage for nice crunch and colour, mildly zesty chipotle mayo, and pico. Tortillas are obtained from local company La Tortilleria.

A Beyond Meat taco ($5.99) sees the popular protein used in vegan burgers presented in taco form with guacamole, salsa and pico. It's got less texture than actual meat, but provides a decent imitation should a craving for the classics hit.

Handmade Nutella empanadas are $6.99 for an order of two, the Nutella hot and liquid on the inside and a heavy dusting of cinnamon sugar all over the outside. While nicely sweet, these could be a little more stuffed with filling on the inside.

Palomas go for $10, the usual combination of tequila and grapefruit juice boozy yet drinkable and tropical.

Margaritas go for the same price, tart and just strong enough with an inventive rim that's half salt and half Tajin for a bit of spice. You can also combine tequila with your choice of around half a dozen flavours of Jarritos for $8.

Formerly home to Oak Island, the long narrow space is decked out in wagon wheel chandeliers, a mural and an Insta-worthy neon feature at the back.
