For my friends and I, it's a time-honored tradition: the yearly trip down to Donald D. Summerville Pool in Ashbridge's Bay in order to do cannonballs off one of the tallest diving boards in the city. All of us are big guys—we used to all play football together—so we definitely cause some huge splashes, but our antics are nothing but child's play when compared to the talent that assembled at the pool yesterday.

The Trident Splash National Cannonball Championship, Canada's largest premier cannonball competition, brought the ten best splash-makers from across the country to Donald Summerville Pool for a multi-round showdown where each jump was judged on splash, flair and the ability to tuck.

Two-time world bellyflop and cannonball champion Brian Utley from Calgary ended up taking the crown—and the $2000 prize— this year, crediting his success to a steady regimen of Pilates and water aerobics.

Toronto was well-represented during the tournament, as local jumper Garfield Andrews entertained the crowd with pre-jump routines which included dressing up as Princess Leia and a zombie. He was clearly one of the crowd favorites.

Utley plans to return next year to defend his title.
